Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey commuted the death sentence of Robin “Rocky” Myers to life in prison Friday, saying there were enough questions about his guilt that she could not move forward with his execution.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall was highly critical of Gov. Kay Ivey’s decision Friday to commute an Alabama inmate’s death sentence. In a Friday night statement, Marshall said Ivey’s decision belied the facts of Robin “Rocky” Myers' case.

Marshall, ever the political opportunist, instead chose to frame the governor’s decision as an affront to his authority rather than an act of conscience.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has announced the commutation of Robin “Rocky” Myers from death row to life in prison without parole, marking the second time since the death penalty was reinstated in the state in 1976 that a sitting governor has commuted a death sentence.

Larry Wayne Whitehead, 62, was convicted in 1996 for the death of Albertville police officer and detective Andrew Whitten. Whitten was set to testify against Whitehead in an upcoming theft trial, according to court records.

Christopher Sepulvado, 81, died Saturday at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, Louisiana, "from natural causes as a result of complications arising from his pre-existing medical conditions," according to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Robin Myers was convicted of committing murder during a 1991 robbery. Gov. Kay Ivey said evidence in his case was not enough for her to support putting him to death.
