Peru's government has severed diplomatic relations with Mexico over the asylum claim of former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez.

Peru has decided to break off diplomatic relations with Mexico, the Andean nation's foreign minister said on Monday, after Peru's former prime minister holed up in the Mexican embassy in the country to request asylum.

Peru is severing diplomatic relations with Mexico over its granting of diplomatic asylum to a former prime minister accused of being involved in a coup attempt in 2022.

Lima denounced the decision to grant Betssy Chávez, an alleged co-author of an attempted coup, as an "unfriendly act".

“Today we learned with surprise and deep regret that Betssy Chavez, the alleged co-author of the coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo, is being granted asylum at the Mexican Embassy residence in Peru,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugo de Zela told a news conference.

Peru's government will decide this week whether it should grant safe passage to Mexico to an opposition politician holed up at the Mexican embassy in Lima, the country's foreign minister said, amid a tense standoff between the two countries.

Diplomatic relations between Mexico and Peru have deteriorated even further after the Peruvian government announced it would sever ties with Mexico.
