Five people have been arrested in New York and charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota, whom police say was tortured and abused for weeks before his death.

The body of Sam Nordquist, 24, was found in a field after he had been reported missing. The district attorney in Ontario County, N.Y., called the circumstances surrounding the death “beyond depraved.”

Canandaigua, N.Y. — Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man who was reported missing in February, was tortured repeatedly for over a month before he was killed, according to state police. Five people have been charged with his murder, police spokesperson Lynnea Crane said Friday.

"In my 20-year law enforcement career, this is one of the most horrific crimes I’ve ever investigated," a New York state police captain said.

Nordquist, a transgender man originally from Minnesota, was first reported missing on Feb. 9. He had reportedly been in New York since September. Police believe he had been tortured for more than a month, with his body later found in a field in Yates County, New York.
