Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has officially overtaken both of its predecessors at the global box office to become the highest grossing film in the trilogy.

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has evolved into one of Hollywood's most successful animated film series. With each installment, the blue blur continues breaking records, solidifying its place in pop culture.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has earned $204.5 million from the domestic market and $180 million from international territories for a total of $385 million worldwide. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, meanwhile, banked $575 million at the domestic box office and $786 million from international markets for a total of $1.36 billion globally.

As it's early January, we are still largely in holdover mode. But that shouldn't discount the performance of those movies that released at the end of last year and are still doing solid business. Among them are Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
