The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation into a plane crash that occurred near Waterloo.

Flight data appeared to show the private plane attempted a last-minute turn before spiraling into an Illinois tree line amid a developing storm, authorities said.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department said the father and son were in St. Louis for a Cardinals baseball game and were heading home when they crashed.
