Investigators identified the man who died as George Sandiford, of South Bay. According to a sheriff's office report, the crash happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. at South Boulevard and Hatton Highway. Investigators say Sandiford was driving east on Southern Boulevard and approaching the intersection at Hatton Highway when he ran a red light.
Prior to the landing attempt, "One of the tail rotor pitch links was disconnected from a tail rotor blade," the report found. The tail rotor gearbox separated and partially fell out of the sky during the landing attempt, causing the helicopter to spin out of control. The NTSB is continuing to investigate the crash.
