The Motion Picture Association is asking Meta to stop referring to content shown to teen accounts on Instagram as guided by PG-13 ratings, saying it is misleading.
The Motion Pictures Association has warned Instagram parent Meta to cease and desist the recently introduced Teen Accounts that are “guided by PG-13,” which the organization says exploits its ratings brand.
The Motion Picture Association has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Meta, objecting to the social media platform's use of filters inspired by the PG-13 movie rating system for content moderation on Instagram for users under 18.
The spokesperson additionally told us that the company had never claimed or implied that its accounts were actually PG-13 rated or that they had been certified by the MPA. Instead, the company says, its new rules were guided by the PG-13 standards, which it says there is a legal precedent for.
The MPA said that Instagram owner Meta wants to exploit the trusted (and trademarked) rating system for its own use.
