The Trump administration has deployed the California National Guard in response to protests in Los Angeles that began Friday evening over immigration enforcement operations, which resulted in some clashes between demonstrators and authorities,

Clashes between protesters and government forces have intensified in Los Angeles as at least 2,000 National Guard troops arrived over the weekend to counter demonstrations against President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement policies.

California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, have described the move as "unnecessary".

The deployment of National Guard troops to the Los Angeles riots was lauded by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who called the decision "common sense."

Homeland Security Secretary Noem blamed California Gov. Newsom for the need to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles protests.

A Department of Homeland Security request for 21,000 National Guard troops to support "expansive interior immigration enforcement operations" includes a call for troops to search for unaccompanied children in some cases.

Harris said the deployment is "part of the Trump Administration's cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division."
