Meta began fact checks in December 2016, after President Donald Trump was elected to his first term, in response to criticism that "fake news" was spreading on its platforms. For years, the tech giant boasted it was working with more than 100 organizations in more than 60 languages to combat misinformation.
Meta, Now Fact-Check Free, Is Testing X-Style Community Notes
According to the company, it’ll initially use the same open-source algorithm that is already used by X, with ratings taking into consideration the rating history of each user to help determine which notes will appear on the platform.

This will allow us to build on what X has created and improve it for our own platforms over time,” Meta said in its announcement. While it will look similar, the company may modify how the notes are ranked and rated.
