Wild weather on the Oregon coast may have gotten even wilder than expected late Monday night when a tornado hit the land near Rockaway Beach, according to a preliminary report from the National Weather Service.

A trained weather spotter reported a tornado yesterday evening around 9:24 pm in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. According to the National Weather Service, the KRTX weather radar, located in Portland, showed a “fairly strong velocity couplet” in the area at the same time the tornado was reported.

While the tornado hasn't been confirmed, the NWS said it received reports of a suspected waterspout that made landfall in Rockaway Beach around 9:30 p.m.

A weather event that hit Rockaway Beach on Monday night was officially a tornado, the National Weather Service in Portland has confirmed. The agency said “an EF-0 tornado” officially touched down at 9:24 p.m. on Monday.
