Democrats made broad gains Tuesday in Connecticut’s first general election since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, flipping open top-of-ballot seats that had been controlled by Republicans in the Democratic cities of New Britain and Norwich and suburbs of Branford and Westport.

Gov. Ned Lamont (D) spoke Wednesday about local election results in Connecticut and SNAP funding amid the federal government shutdown. Democrats locally and nationally had a successful night at the polls.

Connecticut’s U.S. senators said the election results show voters want Democrats to keep pushing on health care amid the government shutdown.

Democrats flipped 29 seats in Connecticut’s municipal elections, with the state Democratic Party chair calling the results historic.

Progressives in Connecticut heralded Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral election, as they look toward next year’s statewide elections with renewed energy. Supporters of Mamdani gathered at a party in Hamden to watch the results come in.

Result were still coming in Tuesday evening in two blue-collar central Connecticut cities where Democrats were looking to win back control of city hall while Republicans sought to maintain power.
