The Indianapolis Colts' 2025 season is in danger of ending on a sour note, as quarterback Daniel Jones went down with a torn Achilles in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Colts practice-squad quarterback Philip Rivers instantly has been installed as an 18-1 proposition to win the 2025 comeback player of the year award at one major sportsbook. At another, he’s 15-1. At both, Rivers is third on the list of odds, behind 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey at -140 and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott at +125.
But, Rivers has Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford chasing him for the seventh spot at the same time. Stafford currently has 63,163 yards after Week 14 this season. He’s trailing Rivers by 277 yards, which could be doable in one game. Stafford might have to keep chasing Rivers if he gets some action on the field and increases his all-time total.
Philip Rivers has been an instant success as a high school football coach in Alabama. His team will be cheering him on in his surprising NFL return.

Philip Rivers, with 649 passing yards, will leapfrog Ben Roethlisberger on all-time career list
Currently, Rivers has 63,440 yards. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has 64,088 yards. With 649 yards, Rivers will leapfrog Roethlisberger. Of course, it likely will come down to a question of No. 7 vs. No. 8. Ram quarterback Matthew Stafford is about to skip past both of them.
