A leader of one of the biggest unions in California was arrested amid protests against federal immigration raids in the Los Angeles area.

A local immigrant rights organization said more than 45 people were detained in the operations, which were described as “random sweeps.”

Another New York City public school student has been detained by ICE. Local officials say the 11th grader from Queens was taken into custody after an immigration court hearing. CBS News New York's Allen Devlin reports.

The Meriden Superintendent of Schools said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not contacted the district or any Meriden public schools.

Federal agents carried out large-scale ICE raids across Los Angeles, detaining dozens and sparking tense clashes with protesters in the city’s Fashion District. The LAPD did not take part, and many residents were alarmed to see heavily armed officials operating in a city known as a "sanctuary" for undocumented immigrants.
