President Donald Trump kicked off an unprecedented military-style parade in Washington, D.C.—commemorating the Army’s 250th anniversary and his 79th birthday—as millions across the country took to the streets to protest, rallying against his expanded immigration raids and a spending bill projected to slash healthcare access for millions.

Across the country, an estimated 5 million protesters took part in more than 2,000 protests, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, a co-sponsor of the nationwide protest. In the Bay Area, more than 50 protests were planned stretching south from Gilroy north to Santa Rosa.

The largely peaceful protests during the "No Kings Day" demonstration in downtown Los Angeles took an intense turn in the afternoon. Police ordered the crowd to disperse at about 4:15 p.m. PDT near Alameda Street and Temple Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division.

"We are here today in Tacoma saying we will not yield to that darkness in the smallest dimension," said former governor Jay Inslee.
