ROME (Reuters) -Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Pope Leo on Friday, the Vatican said, a day after an Israeli strike on Gaza's sole Catholic church killed three people and injured several more.

An Israeli shell slammed into the compound of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, killing three people and wounding 10 others, including the parish priest, according to church officials.

Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke with Pope Leo XIV following the Gaza church incident, expressing sorrow as the Pope urged renewed peace talks and protection of holy sites.
