The lions of Akagera National Park in Rwanda are right at home just a few years after their reintroduction. When people returned to the country after the genocide in 1994, many were living directly off the land and lions were poisoned and eventually exterminated to make way for livestock. After assuming management of Akagera in partnership with the Rwandan Development Board in 2010, our primary goal was to return the park to its ‘Big 5’ status.
