The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, was convicted of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship after he left the vessel while hundreds of passengers and crew were still on board following its collision with rocks in 2012. He claimed he fell into a lifeboat, but was famously ordered by a coast guard commander to "go back aboard, damn it!"
