When Edith Wharton started writing she was obliged to hide the fact, and had to ask for scraps of brown wrapping paper from the staff in the kitchen on which to write. Outlook Magazine said of The House of Mirth on its publication in 1905 that it would, "take its place with the great works of fiction."
