A song from the Torres Strait Islands, Surrare is a song about hunting a seabird that is sung in Ailan Kriol language or Yumplatok. The Western Island language name for seagulls is both ‘Surrare’ and ‘Saora Leh’ depending on the Kala Lagaw Ya dialect. This version is part of Jessie Lloyd’s Mission Songs Project, which reveals what daily life was like for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian’s on Christian missions and state-run settlements. Through these performances of rare secular
