The Hawaiian monk seal is a rare, endangered seal native to the Hawaiian Islands. It’s one of only two monk seal species left in the world. These seals are known for their round faces, big dark eyes, and silvery-grey coats. They spend most of their time lounging on beaches or hunting fish and squid in the ocean. Unfortunately, their population is threatened by habitat loss, entanglement in fishing gear, and lack of food. Conservation efforts are helping, but they remain one of the most endangere

Meet Hawaiian monk seal, Kekoa, showing off his signature “galumphing” move. Unlike our California sea lions, who can rotate their hind flippers and walk on all fours, seals move their bodies by scooting in this unique style. Mahalo to Danni from our animal care team for helping Kekoa stay healthy, active, and engaged every day! 💙 Learn more about Hawaiian monk seals, and see Kekoa, during the park’s 11:30am or 3:15pm monk seal educational talks. #sealifepark #marinelifeconservation #hawaiianmo

Yesterday we saw this Hawaiian monk seal that looked like it was covered in algae and needed a molt soon. Monk seals go through this once a year, and it can look dramatic, but it’s completely normal. They shed their entire outer layer of skin and fur over about one to two weeks. During this time they rest on the beach, look extra flaky, and conserve energy while their new coat grows in. If you see one, give it space so it can finish its makeover in peace! I’ve never seen this seal before and it

This is the rare Hawaiian monk seal, one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth and found nowhere else but the Hawaiian Islands. Fewer than 1,400 remain today. They are protected under both U.S. federal and Hawaiʻi state law—disturbing a monk seal is illegal and can result in a Class C felony, carrying penalties of up to 5 years in prison and $50,000 in fines. Monk seals don’t chew their food—they swallow it whole. With 32 teeth and an exceptionally strong jaw, they crush bones and shell

@oneoceandiving earlier today a Hawaiian monk seal 🦭 swam up to us and cruised with the sharks while demonstrating the same advice we give people everyday on how to deter a curious shark (minus the be ready to bite them ;)) Natural wisdom. I wasn’t close enough to see tag # but I think said UT2 FYI @malamamonkseal ❤️ *Please note Hawaiian Monk Seals are an endangered species so please give them a LOT of space (ESPECIALLY if they have a pup ❤️) and if you see them hauling out to take a nap on la

Today we watched a Hawaiian monk seal feeding on an octopus (tako). The octopus had its suckers attached to the seal’s face, and the seal was thrashing to loosen the grip, which is normal feeding behavior since they often shake octopus repeatedly until the suckers release enough to swallow it. Even though it’s November, we were able to dive the Nā Pali Coast today. Many companies don’t run Niʻihau and Nā Pali trips year-round, but there are windows between the larger swells when conditions are ex

Hawaiian monk seals are native to the islands and often rest along Po’ipu Beach. They are also known as ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua (“dog running in the rough water”) and are an endangered seal species. Ashlee caught a great video of one swimming close to shore. | Christine Howatt

Did you know? Hawaiian monk seals use suction feeding to eat! Instead of chewing, they create a strong pull with their mouths to slurp up fish in an instant. Our animal care team prepares Kekoa’s meals, but the way he eats is uniquely his own. 🦭 #hawaiianmonkseal #monksealmonday #hawaii #oahu #sealifepark | Sea Life Park

Curious, playful, and completely unique to these islands — meet the Hawaiian monk seal🦭💙 This endangered species is one of only two remaining monk seal species in the world, and fewer than 1,600 are left. Their curiosity often leads them to investigate new things (like our camera 😅), but remember — they’re protected by law and need plenty of space to thrive. - - - #SeasportDivers #ScubaDiving #Kauai #Hawaii #ExploreMore #HawaiianMonkSeal #MarineLife #Conservation #OceanEducation #insta360 | S

BEFORE & AFTER: Watch the incredible growth of a nursing seal pup! Hawaiian monk seal pups typically weigh 25-35 pounds at birth, like the one seen at first in this video from Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. After five to seven weeks of drinking mom’s fat-rich milk, the pups can grow to be 200 pounds! Also impressive: Mothers fast during the nursing period and do not leave their pup. These endangered marine mammals, called 'Īlioholoikauaua in Hawaiian, can be found throughout the archipel

A 60-year-old elementary school teacher from California was injured when she encountered a mother monk seal known as Rocky who recently gave birth. Wildlife officials have warned beachgoers to steer clear of her.
