On 6/14/21 rangers and visitors at Exit Glacier heard a loud crack followed by an outburst flood releasing from the face of the glacier. Water, large chunks of ice, and glacial till rushed down the canyon in front of the glacier and flowed into the Outwash Plain. Within 5 – 10 minutes the surge was gone, leaving large chunks of ice to melt on bare ground. Glaciers are unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly.
