The War Apartments are a part of the history of Brunswick, Georgia, that many people didn't know even exist. The Brunswick Shipyard opened in early 1943 during World War 2 on the south end of Brunswick next to where the Sidney Lanier Bridge is today. Brunswick's population was 16,000 before the shipyard opened. Once the shipyard opened, the population of Brunswick grew to 60,000 in a few months. They had a housing problem. We walked in downtown Brunswick, Georgia, and we looked at some of the historic buildings in the area. Many of these buildings date back to the late 1800s. We saw the Krause/McGarvey building (1884), Walker building (1890), Elliot building (1890), Altman building (1893), Schreiber building (1887), and Tait's building (1890).
